Notes

Dam (per source): Squaw Reference: Appaloosa News 3-66:62 Some notes from reseracher Pat Mefferd: "Was LITTLE CHIEF (unregistered Appaloosa) actually registered as LITTLE ELK ApHC 950? LITTLE CHIEF was the sire of the Bernard Appaloosa "tap root" mares SWIFT REWARD and OCALA ROSE. "ELK", under the name of LITTLE CHIEF, was reported to have sired Appaloosas in Florida in 1958. Either the "Bernard Mares" who went to Florida were…(1) in foal to "ELK", or (2) he himself was in Florida for at least one season. I'm still not truly clear on this, however I feel he was in Florida for a time, because he was said to be known as LITTLE CHIEF there, and not LITTLE ELK. A letter was given to Mike Hanna (friend and client) when he acquired OCALA FLIGHT and it stated "FLIGHT'S" second dam, OCALA ROSE, was by LITTLE CHIEF (registered as LITTLE ELK ApHC 950). This information was provided to him by Charles H. Tanner, Jr. This information was said to have been passed on to Charles H. Tanner Jr. by Leonard M. Bernard, when Tanner purchased Leonard Bernard's horses. I do not know if the letter was in Tanner's hand or Bernard's hand. The story goes…Bernard, Jr. wanted to add a little color to his Polo horses, so he purchased LITTLE CHIEF, from Nate Pyle of Boulder, Co. Bernard, Jr., under Arlington Farms, registered him as LITTLE ELK ApHC T950 in 1956 when he was a 3yr old. LITTLE ELK later went permanent (the "T" was dropped… he sired 63 known ApHC registered foals). One reason may also be that the name "Little Chief" had already been taken by LITTLE CHIEF F972." FWIW: The photo came from an ad stating the horse stood at stud and was for sale in Califonria,; owner Marshall Walker, Standish, California, 1966~AT Source: appaloosaterritory.com Tentative registry, tentative901.html
